Isla's 1st Birthday Party Details - Woodland Theme

8.28.2017

I can hardly believe Isla's first birthday has come and past. Her first year went by in such a blur. And now almost a month later she is walking and moving like never before.

I regret that I didn't get more photos of Isla's party, especially since we put some much work into it. But unfortunately, like so many things in life, this didn't go exactly as planned. On Friday, just two more days till Isla's party, Jedidiah cut his fingers with a chop saw while cutting the little wooden signs for the table. We spent the better part of that day in the Er and then recovering from stress. We did manage to get everything done and it was another wildly successful party but come the day of, I was exhausted. I'm thankful I remembered to capture these an hour before our guests came.

These aren't my best captured photos but I'll love looking back at them in the years to come. We decorated most of this party from left over baby shower items and things we made. The wooden slices came from Target, which was perfect because they were smooth and food ready. We found a piece of aspen and made a cupcake stand out of three of them.

I made the marshmallow mushroom stand by carving floral foam into the shape of the tin and hot gluing moss to the outside.

The background I made from coffee filters, hot glue, and a thick thread. It was very easy but time consuming.

As an alternative to giving out candy and cheap toys I decided to offer a trail mix bar. My guest had fun adding what ever they wanted in take home paper bags. For the meal (I didn't photograph) we did a huge taco bar. Both were a big hit!

I look forward to future parties and decorating them. Hopefully no one will get injured next time. Sorry this was so rushed, I usually try to take more time for writing but Isla is mad and I need to get her to bed.

Till next time,

Chloie's Blacklight Birthday Party

5.01.2015

I can't believe my little girl just turned 15! We don't have to do the math on how old that makes me. In truth I had her very young. This year Chloie wanted to have another slumber party since last year she had such a blast. I'll admit the idea of a bunch of girls screaming and running a muck around my house wasn't my first choice. But honestly she has some wonderful friends so I can't complain. After going some rounds with her on themes I suggested she do a blacklight party. It's been quite the task but well worth the effort.

I didn't realize it at the time but Chloie pointed out, "Mom, all my gifts from you and Dad are Asian themed!" She was totally thrilled. Her favorite gift was probably her Ouran High School Host Club tee. We're pretty fond of that anime and quote it often. Piper made her that hat out of tissue paper. As you can see our kiddos are total goofballs from head to toe. I know my photos of me always look elegant and serious, and while I am almost always dressed up we're a pretty dorky bunch of people.

That's the look of sugar absorbing through her skin. She's over the moon with excitement! Chloie cracks me up!

I didn't have time to make a cake this year. I usually make one but with all the work I did in the basement I had to just buy one at the last minute. Chloie LOVES chocolate, me not so much but this cake was surprisingly moist and wonderfully delicious!

I just have to note that every photo I took of Piper looked like this! LOL! She was so happy to be a part of her sister's party.

I regret that I didn't get nearly as many photos as I would have like to of our basement. I got a cold at the end of Chloie's party and it slowed me down. However since we bought a lot of reusable things we plan to do the same theme for Piper later this year. Piper, of course is ecstatic about that. I'll be sure to take more photos later this year and improve on my blacklight photography. It's quite challenging photographing in a nearly dark room. There aren't a lot of tutorials on the subject. Many that are out there didn't work for me. A tripod is a MUST! Any motion, while it can look cool, will leave a ghostly blur.

We had a lot of fun decorating the basement. The whole family got in on the hands. Sadly I got a bit carried away with the splatter painting and while we did have drop cloths laid out, it did get everywhere in places. Thankfully we fully intend to replace the carpet sometime in the future. It's not in the best condition. I made the large streamers from hula hoops, paper, and streamers.

The girls had a wonderful time and Chloie tells me that they are still talking about her party at school. This was definitely the best birthday yet! If you are interested in what we used, most of the things can be found at the Dollar Tree, Party City, Home Depot and Wal-Mart. (<---though I will note I dislike that store) You'd be surprised the things you thought would be blacklight reactive that weren't and vice versa. I took the suggestion from another site and bought a small blacklight flashlight and carried it around with me when I went shopping. What a time saver!

Christmas Details

12.20.2014

 Hello Friends!

I have huge plans to post on here a great deal more and while I am determined to stick to that, with the holidays here it all went out the window. Furthermore I'm having a really hard time believing that it's almost Christmas! Wasn't it just Thanksgiving? I blinked my eyes and all of a sudden I'm smack in the middle of the holiday rush and I am completely unprepared. And while I applaud all the women who are completely on it with their many blog postings and Instagram picts I am so far behind dare I say it's been like 1 1/2 weeks since I washed my hair. Yeah I'm not proud of that one. Don't get me wrong I take baths regularly but washing hair is a whole day process for me. THANKFULLY a perk to being on Accutane (It's also a curse) my hair never gets oily. It stays perfectly fluffy even a week later...

My past few weeks have been filled with sooo many doctors apts. Dentist apts, Eye apts, Dermatologist apts, Physical therapy apts.... just so many appointments. Regrettably Accutane has greatly affected my overall health. I'm experiencing a larger number of headaches lately and it's been a lot of back and forth of finding what will safely work for me. Next up a neurologist! More appointments! Yea!??  I was prone to tension migraines before all of this so it's my great hope that I can get botox shots in my head (I'm open to anything at this point) to relax my muscles. Hopefully they will also tell me I'm in good health otherwise. (The hypochondriac in me needs to know this lol!)

Sooooo back to Christmas and the holidays, with all this on my plate I've been waaay behind on life in general. Last year I was totally on top of everything. I finished shopping before December even started. That left me plenty of time to focus on the fun activities I usually do with my family. This year however I still have shopping to do, presents to wrap, crafted gifts to make, gifts to build, and holiday activities to do with the girls. It's been an especially challenging week with Jedidiah out of town with schooling for work. Great timing Jed... I am so thankful he is back and the girls are finally out of school for the year. I feel that alone will greatly help. So the question I keep asking myself is, can do all of this in 6 days? I think so. I feel a personal challenge coming on.

And while this month has been terrible busy I am thankful I stopped to make time for the little things that were important to the girls. This past Wednesday Chloie and Piper decorated gingerbread houses. I made it extra special and set the whole thing up in the living room and we watched Christmas movies. Usually this would create a terrible mess but much to my surprise it was all contained and the girls did well too keep it on the table...phew!

How are your holidays going? Hopefully much better than mine. Do you have any special family traditions? I over heard a woman in Target telling her boyfriend that each year her family finds each other a pickle gift. Whether it was an ornament or a sweater with a pickle on it, it had to be something with pickles! Haha I thought that was a pretty fun tradition. Makes me want to start our own unique one. Well Merry Christmas Lovelies!

Mini Pot Revamp

11.22.2014

I was at Target the other day getting a few things when I happened to pass the decor isle. For a while now I've been running with the idea of trying a few faux succulents in my home to see if they would look okay and not be too tacky. I'm starting to accept, I just don't have a ton of light of in my home and until I can demolition my house with more windows I have to work with what I have. ANYHOO rambling, I was in the Target isle and saw this lonely succulent plant sitting there asking me to rescue it. So for $3.50 I really couldn't argue!

This was a pretty plain gray pot before I started. It also had a strange texture and while I plan to seek out better faux succulents and pots in the future this was a good trial plant to start with.

This whole project is very quick, affordable, and can easily be something the kiddo can participate in.

Supplies:

- Small Pot (Succulent Optional)
- Paint Brushes
- Acrylic Paint (Dries Faster)
- Masking Tape
- Painting Tray (Old Plate/ Or Paper Plate)
- Water Cup for Paint
- Something to Cover Crafting Space
- Gloss Sealer (Optional)

Directions:

- Make sure your crafting space is covered to keep paint from making a mess everywhere
- Give pot a quick wipe with damp cloth to make sure it's clean - allow to dry
- Paint your pot what ever color your want then allow it to fully dry.
- Then peel strips of tape and place into triangles on your pot, lightly press, then paint open area like shown above. You don't have to use Turtle Tape. It's just what I already had on hand. I love this stuff. It's pricy but you WILL get great results every time! Don't rush, do one section at a time and carefully peel the tape off when each area is dry. I finished my whole pot in about 1 1/2 hrs. Maybe a bit longer but I also had a daughter sitting right next to me drawing, who also loves to show me her pictures step by step in the making lol!

Lastly when you are done you can  paint or spray a glossy sealant over it. Like modpodge or an art spray. I had a glossy art spray on hand. This total project cost me $3.50

Halloween: Costumes

10.31.2014

I have to say this years costumes were a huge success! I was really worried on how each would come out. Both girls decided on what they wanted to be at the very last minute. To make matters worse, money was already tight with the birthday party we had for Piper last week and with the water heater that decided to give out on us... Yea?

So you can imagine I was relieved that most of Chloie's costume was from pieces we already had. I have to say for only spending about $10 on some makeup, a scarf, a belt, and earrings I'm pretty impressed with the out come. She looked so grown up!

Piper's costume, however, I did make from scratch. The only thing I didn't 100% make was the dress. I only sewed on embellishments. I lucked out and had some of the fabric on hand. Piper's costume cost about $40 for materials. The bonnet was made from a thrifted straw hat that I cut up and covered. I completely winged it making the bloomers and capelet. I have to say I'm really pleased with the outcome. She was stopped by everyone we passed.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Halloween! Did you do anything special? Did you dress up? I'd love to hear what you did. I was thankful that the weather was surprisingly warm for Colorado. Last year was miserable outside!
